1. The Lack of Tourists
According to World Bank data, Bangladesh is the world’s least “touristy” destination (160 million residents and only 125,000 annual visitors). And the Bangladeshi people are fascinated by tourists—especially ones with blonde hair and blue eyes! I was eagerly greeted by many and often asked to pose for photos. I even caused a bit of a frenzy when I was mistakenly identified as Miley Cyrus by some locals (I think it was the braids!). The Bangladeshi people were incredibly kind and made me feel special everywhere I went.

2. The Bangladeshi Resilience
This tree trunk is one of many scattered along the Bay of Bengal, which bore the brunt of Cyclone Bulbul. Cyclones and associated storm surges and floods have led to almost 520,000 natural disaster deaths over the past 40 years. Yet the Bangladeshi people continue to survive and thrive.

3. Bangladeshi Street Style
Bangladeshi men often dye their beards with henna and wear skirts known as longyi. I am obsessed with the look! I also love the abundance of pet goats in multi-colored sweaters—they made me so happy!!

4. Bangladesh’s Female Empowerment
Bangladesh is a world leader when it comes to female heads of state. It has had female prime ministers for the last 28 years. #girlpower

5. Bangladesh’s Inclusiveness
Bangladesh declared independence from Pakistan in 1971 and has the world’s 4th largest Muslim population. So I was truly grateful for their efforts to help me celebrate Christmas everywhere I went!
