Panama

Overall, the vibe is a unique blend of urban Spanish sophistication, lush rainforests and remote island bliss. Plus, Panama boasts stunning hats and a famous canal!

Where I Stayed: W Panama

I stayed at The W, which is centered in the heart of Panama City. With short cab rides and brief walks to local activities, it was the perfect launching spot for Panama travels.

Make sure to shake off the jet lag at the rooftop pool, which boasts stunning city views and fabulous drinks and food. Plus, every inch of the hotel is designed for the perfect IG pic. Super fun!

While in Panama City, I also spent time at the JW Marriott, which is near The W and has equally lovely views, delicious food, a lively rooftop bar and an adjacent casino.

But if you’re looking for something more authentic, consider the American Trade Hotel in old town (Casco Viejo). It is a luxury boutique hotel steeped in Old World charm, located in a UNESCO world heritage site. From the ornate tilework throughout the building to the signature cocktails in the lobby bar and the soulful sounds of its jazz club, this hotel is definitely worth the visit!

What I Wore: Accessories, Accessories, Accessories!!!!

The most important addition to my outfits during this trip was the accessories I paired with my neutral clothing. A statement gold necklace and a Panama-inspired hat will elevate your outfit and your social media. The weather in Panama is hot for most of the year, so light, breathable clothing is probably the best option!

Of course, I had multiple hats to style, and added my favorite Gucci belt to this adorable outfit!

I paired it with a chic but affordable swimsuit from Amazon and threw on one of my Mom's cardigans. A statement accessory or two is a necessity for this trip!

Where I Went: Panama Canal, Gamboa Rainforest and Taboga Island

One of the main reasons I chose to visit Panama was to experience the world-famous canal, and it did not disappoint. Definitely worth the visit!

From there, I drove to Gamboa Rain Forest Reserve and hired a boatto navigate Gatun Lake. I was able to feed a variety of capuchin, howler and white-face monkeys and see a variety of native wildlife. It was such an adventure!

My original itinerary included visits to an eco-lodge and a boating excursion to the San Blas Islands. Unfortunately, some unexpected political unrest, which included road blockades by striking workers, resulted in an early departure from Panama. But I was not at all discouraged, and I can’t wait to return to finish what I started!

Since I couldn’t reach the San Blas Islands, I opted for hiring a boat for some fishing and a trip to nearby Tobaga Island. It was the perfect alternative. With a little wind in my hair on a bright, sunny day, Panama revealed itself to be a tropical paradise!

And definitely don't miss out on the nightlife! Since the drinking and gambling age in Panama is 18, I was able to enjoy a night out at the casino, followed by cocktails overlooking the city.

A few stray observations during my Panamanian travels. The people are so friendly, and they are willing to go out of their way to assist! Panama also encourages Americans to retire to Panama by offering many tax incentives. While the official language in Panama is Spanish, many people speak English since cultural ties with the U.S. are very strong. Panama also accepts the U.S. dollar as currency—so convenient!

And... as always... keep an eye out for a pop of color! The streets of Panama are filled with beautiful urban art that will catch your eye!

What I Ate/Drank:

I absolutely had to try Panama's local beer, which is served just about anywhere. There are micro-breweries in Panama, but the three main beers are Balboa, Panama and Atlas. I'm a bigger fan of Panama Lite, which is a crisp & clean tasting drink, especially with a few ice cubes and a lime.

If you want something stronger, try Seco Herrerano which is a sugar-cane based spirit typically served over milk and ice. Or go for a pina colada, especially if it’s served poolside in a pineapple.

Panama will also delight foodies, and the coastal seafood dishes are amazing. Ceviche is a must but also try some of the more traditional local dishes like empanadas, arroz con pollo and ropa vieja.
