North Carolina (Charlotte)

Overall, it’s sophisticated Southern charm mixed with a modern urban sensibility.

Where I stayed:

I stayed with friends in the Plaza Midwood neighborhood, but there are so many hotel options. Try The Duke Mansion for classic elegance, The Ivey’s Hotel in Uptown for boutique chic (and great photo ops), or The Ritz Carlton for upscale luxury and a killer spa.

What I wore:

I visited Charlotte in late autumn, so it was definitely sweater weather. I opted for a layered look, focusing on denim, belts and boots. If you’re visiting in the summer months, prepare for steamier weather and go for flowy dresses and shorts.

What I did:

This trip was all about “dining and design.”  I explored the emerging urban art and food scenes at Optimist Park and Camp North End, was awed by the innovative pieces at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art and was inspired by the explosion of architectural preservation taking place in Charlotte.

Urban renewal at its best! If you have time, consider taking an Uptown architectural walking tour.

What I ate/drank:

I personally love a messy pulled pork sandwich dripping with vinegar sauce, and you’ll find some of the best in Charlotte. For classic BBQ, don’t miss Midwood Smokehouse, City BBQ, or Sweet Lew’s BBQ.

And for fried chicken, check out Price’s Chicken Coop. Don’t pass on the sweet tea and hush puppies!

If you’re looking for something more modern, check out Optimist Hall, which has an indoor food truck vibe. A former mill turned food hall, it’s a decadent international treasure where you can dine on pork belly ramen, a pulled chorizo empanada, fried pickles and a Bourbon Peach Sweet Tea, all in the same meal.

The legal drinking age in the US is 21, and North Carolina’s signature drink is The Cherry Bounce (shout out to Raleigh!). And for a fun dive bar with a fascinating back story about community resistance to urban development, check out the Thirsty Beaver Saloon.

Social media musts:

It’s all about the urban art and architecture in Charlotte. You can’t take a bad photo anywhere, but don’t miss Camp North End. Go for the photos and stay for the nightlife!
