New York (Coney Island)

Overall, it’s what summer at the shore is all about!

Where I went:

Brooklyn (Coney Island Neighborhood)

What I wore:

A tank top and denim shorts—it was Independence Day!

What I did:

Attended the annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Competition. Yes, it’s awkward and excessive, but it’s hard to look away! The year that I went, Matt Stonie ended Joey Chestnut’s 8-year winning streak by eating 62 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Rough.

I also rode the world-famous Cyclone roller coaster at Coney Island Boardwalk, cheered on the local minor league baseball team and capped off the adventure with beach fireworks. I’m a big believer that travel can begin close to home!

What I ate/drank:

A Nathan’s hot dog, of course. Plus, boardwalk food (mangos on a stick, designed like a flower and flavored with spices) and classic baseball treats (peanuts and Cracker Jack). The legal drinking age in the US is 21, and the local beer is Brooklyn Summer Ale. Or try a Nathan’s old-fashioned lemonade. It’s refreshing on a warm summer day.

Social media musts:

Admittedly, you probably don’t want to take photos of competitive eaters demolishing dozens of hot dogs, but Coney Island has a simple beauty to it. With its classic roller coasters and beach boardwalk, it just feels like summer. Classic Americana.

So, why attend an eating competition? I can only speak for myself. I come from a family of Texans who love state fairs and pie eating contests. In fact, I’ve been known to indulge in some competitive eating from time to time;)
